It is expensive because your SEO campaign is not measurable. It is cheap because it improves on your company cashflow by drawing potential customers to your business via the Internet and to convert them into your real customers.

SEO Rule Will Change

Hi,

It's been really quite some time ago since my last post. I was busy understanding Zend MVC framework for another project. And to also upgrade the Web software architecture for one exisiting client for better maintainability and also doing some work on on-page optimization.

Now, onto the topic of SEO rules. Search Engine Optimization rule is changing and will continue to change and Search Engine Optimization experts (those not work for the Search Engines) are at the mercy of these Search Engines' rules. In my opinion, it is not ethical to give promises or gaurantees about something which one has no control over. The only best gaurantee, which I can think of, is really the clear understanding about business and the SEO rules. And how to put them together.

There are no secrets to SEO, except to keep updated about the changes and acquire a sound understanding about these rules. The most important success ingredient for SEO is not the technical know-how - that's the easy part. The business model, market and demand should be the the first consideration when emarking on SEO. The Power is the Strategy, not Technology. But before you can craft out a good strategy, you must have a sound understanding about things.

In my opinion, the first indication of SEO rule change is the Google introduction of searchWiki. SEO, although is a organic search marketing strategy, is not able to have control over it. And I stand to believe that more changes will come. The only constant is change.

The Machine That Makes BizEngine Possible

This is the Dell 4150 that I've mentioned in my previous post. While archiving files on my Dell Vostro 1400, found this Dell 4150 notebook photo I took a few months back.

As I've mentioned, this is not a luxurious system. With only 640MB Ram, it helped BizEngine to deliver tasks for customers mainly in Web Maintenance and Search Engine Optimization (SEO Singapore) in the early days of BizEngine inception.

Still, I've also installed Http Apache, Tomcat and Php Server running Java Struts and Php Zend. Although, it was a relatively slow system, but I've really learned quite a good deal about MVC (Model View Controller) architecture and indeed we are now building a more robust software architecture for BizEngine's client. I hope we will continue to improve on this.

Can SEO be guaranteed?

It really depend on how do you (or the SEO consultant) define your SEO delivery.

If you are only looking at high visibility on search engines with not so popular keywords. Then the success rate will be very much greater. But if you are looking at SEO contributing to your month end measurable cashflow, then this get a lot more tougher.

Strictly, your SEO campaign cannot be independent by itself because it can only work well with your business marketing strategies (and business model). Even with the best technical SEO know how, without anyone performing a search using your defined keywords, SEO is doomed to fail.

So maybe it will be better to establish the expectation right before the start of your SEO project.

My feel is that nothing is guaranteed in this world. In my humble opinion, the best guarantee one has is knowledge with right and clear understanding. The other guarantee that we all have is death.

My Valued Dell Notebook

I'll be parting with my old Dell 4150 Inspiron by end today. This machine has been with me since my company inception. Although this machine is running with 1.2 Ghz and 640 MB Ram and with only 40MB harddisk space. It allowed me to get my work done for the deliveries I need to make to my client. From simple Web maintenance, SEO Singapore, and up to Software Architecting and Prototyping (MVC model - Php Zend & Java Struts, MySQL & Sybase), it has become part of my valuable asset while running the Internet business. It has followed me from my sleeping room, toilet, libraries, seminars and to my client offices.

Although I'll be getting an IBM Thinkpad T60 (a used notebook) for some software development work, but I'll miss the Dell Inspiron 4150 after we went through the thick and thin together.

Great sedimental value. 4150 - I'll miss you. But you'll be in good hands, because you'll be heading back to the original owner, for a different job.

You may have already realised that a major portion of the revenue generated by Google Adsense program on Singapore Photo Gallery site (SingaporeShots.com) is to be channeled to Singapore Charities and all transactions are monitored by a Singapore Certified Public Accountant from a Singapore Company Secretary - CoSeClinic.

If you do not know, SingaporeShots is a Internet project that I've started sometime ago. It is also for me to learn, examine and test new things.

BizEngine have also join Amazon as Associates and have placed Amazon's product links at SingaporeShots.com. With some minor customisation of codes. Just wanting to do a test of concept.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO Singapore) is really about understanding your web visitors' needs and their behaviour at your site. So putting up the right and essential content at your site is essential, so that your SEO campaign can execute on these content with the aim to convert your visitors into your real customers so as to improve your business cashflow.

At this time, I am trying to beef up the content for a http://www.singaporeshots.com/. I did not execute a complete SEO campaign on this site yet. All that I am trying to do now is to put up Singapore Photos that you may like to see and trying to understand or to discover visitors' behaviour at this site.

To do this, I bought a compact digital camera last year, and started to snap pictures around Singapore Tourist Attractions and Places of Interest in Singapore. In so doing, I suddenly discovered that I've missed out so many beautiful spots that I've should have visited them in my younger days. I did not realise until now that Singapore Orchid can be so beautiful. I was aghast by the sight on the Henderson Waves bridge at night.

I like the saying "The Power is the Strategy, Not Technology". It is still back to the fundamental basis of Demand and Supply. SEO is a search engine marketing strategy that execute on content that are desired by your web visitors. Without rich and authoritative content, there is a limit that one can do with SEO.

Ok, Singapore is now heading towards recession (or that we are already in recession). So it's time for me to invest more in books and resourses to upgrade myself.

I've just bought two books

Php and MySQL Web Development 4th Edition
Search Engine Marketing, Inc 2nd Edition

I've read the Php and MySQL Web Development 3rd edition and Search Marketing, Inc 1st edition and reaped great benefits from both books. Looking to explore new things in the latest edition. I've to constantly remind myself, it's not the technology, but strategy. Technology is a leverage to establish sustainable business system.

So, for a period of time, I'll spend some time on books and SingaporeShots (Singapore Photos You'll Want To See). And do continuing building Internet software businesses that run and applying Search Engine Marketing strategies that work.

Drama filled Singapore F1 race is over. You can still catch the Singapore Race Track Photos at SingaporeShots.com, a Singapore Photo Gallery site.

Three days before and one day after the actual race date, SingaporeShots.com hit a daily traffic of +/- 800 (with one of the days hitting more than 1000).

SingaporeShots.com did not do a complete Search Engine Optimization campaign, instead investing most of the time focusing on beefing up the site photo content. Focusing on the content seem to be the right move. Quite interestingly, there are a number of direct traffic from foreign countries and suprisingly also from other referenced sites.

World's First F1 Night Race

This weekend, Singapore will hold the World's first F1 Night Race in Singapore. See some spectacular day and night photos of the Singapore F1 track or the Singapore F1 Street Circuit if you prefer.

Personally, I walked along the race track a few times, before the road development and the last one just a few days ago with the light-up in the evening. The scenery is just spectacular.

The Internet project: Singapore Photo Gallery has attracted quite a lot of traffic for the last few days at about 300 unique visitors per day. Yes, I know that's not something spectacular if you are talking about a world sport event. On the good side is that I begin to see increasing direct traffic from overseas than via organic search.

And quite interestingly, visitors put up link to SingaporeShots.com at other forums in other countries. I am thrilled.

Here are some I can think of

1. Plant more trees, build more gardens and parks. Eat more vegetables and less on animal foods.

2. Drive less, make use of public transport. The public transport system has to be efficient in the first place and best that they are eco friendly too (Solar energy?).

3. Do away with plastics (plastic bags, bottles, disposible utensils etc). They are now killing our environment.

4. A paperless business operating culture.

5. Maybe we can have Phds doing research and examination into creating new sophiscated device or new machinery out from all unwanted PCs.

Everything fail when there is no market. Even with the best SEO expert that you can find, without a market, your SEO deliverables have limits.

Internet on the Go

With the iPhone, the coming of Google Phone, and other phone with rich multimedia and Internet access function. I think phone users will be spoilt by the choices.

This may also promote the Internet usage and the transformation of marketing from Print and TV to the Web.

You can also upload your videos live using selected phones onto the Internet using Qik. You can also update your blogs or photo album while on the go. And also, you can make phone calls or use MSN or Messenger to connect to your friends anywhere and anytime so long as there is an Internet connection.

I've did a small test during the Singapore Fireworks Celebrations and Singapore Lion Dance Championships. Using the qik program that was installed on my phone (just a Nokia 6120C), I managed to capture videos and upload them onto the Internet quite instanstaniously. The downside is that it consumed too much power and my phone does not have the memory space capacity. So maybe iPhone and G-Phone may resolve this issue.

But still, I am now, a more practical person. I will still be sticking with my Nokia 6120C for sometime. :)

Internet Real Time Videos

This year our Prime Minister did a near real time video demo on the technology "qik" using a Nokia phone with camera during the Singapore National Day Rally 2008 speech.

That's something I was really curious about and went to Qik website at http://www.qik.com/ to create an account and install the program on my 6120C Nokia phone.

I've tested it on two occassions: 1. Singapore Fireworks Celebrations 2008 (link: http://qik.com/video/222731) and 2. Singapore Lion Dance Championships 2008 (link: http://qik.com/video/278408).

Not too bad with the video and audio quality. Just that it consumed alot of my phone battery energy.

Singapore Exciting September

As you might have already know. Singapore will hold the world's first Formula One Grand Prix night race. And the Singapore F1 circuit will have the drivers speed through the Singapore's historical bridge - Anderson Bridge. The other bridge that all F1 vehicles will race through is Esplanade Bridge.

In September, there is also the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration by the Singapore River.
Catch the beautiful light decorations at night. Along Clarke Quay, there are the beautiful Chinese 12 animal signs that will be also lighted up. Check out what your animal sign is, and take a photo with it.

Just a sudden idea

Occassionally for the past few months, I went on foot crusing through the Singapore F1 race circuit track, the Southern Ridges and the Singapore River.

While doing these, I began to discover more about Singapore Tourist Attractions.

With the upcoming F1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix night race to be held in Singapore. Maybe we should have some Singapore structure model sets (or jigsaw puzzles) as gifts (for Singapore Corporate Gifts too) or for sale.

Simple Business, Simple Machines

Hi All,

It's been a few weeks since my last post at BusinessEngine weblog. Quite some happenings during these times.

Firstly, I got a new Dell Vostro notebook with Vista business. The old notebook which I am still using is Dell Inspiron 4150 with only 640MB ram. Although it is a old system with no luxury of power, but I still managed to leverage on it for my first year doing Web maintenance and Web design. Subsequently, I've also installed Apache application server with Php5 and Tomcat. And it allowed me to further evalute software frameworks and programs. I must admin most of my time, I used the computer for Internet purposes, mainly on Search Engine Optimization last year.

Although this old PC system which lacks power and without luxury items (RAM, 3D Video card etc), I still managed to established a Singapore Photo Gallery site that uses Php4 and MySql database. Did some small customisation and learned something new, always. And a few times, I brought this Dell Inspiron 4150 to libraries and do some work and earned some curious stares.

If you knew me, I am lousy at taking pictures. Just last year, the first time in my life, I got myself a digital camera which cost no more than SG$500. It's a Panasonic Lumix FX09. I've spent some time examining the functions, and got started with SingaporeShots.com. The pictures are not professional photo shoots, but they are good enough (just neat at best) to capture information about Singapore in pictorial form. Some of the images include: Henderson Waves, Singapore F1 Race Track, Singapore River, Singapore Airport, NDP and etc. And since SingaporeShots is leveraging on Singapore images, I just feel it's only right that SingaporeShots.com should give something back in return. Hence, the major portion of the revenue generated by Google Adsense (at SingaporeShots.com) will be channelled to Singapore Charities. CoSeClinic Services Pte Ltd has offered to monitor this revenue by assigning one of their Certified Public Accountants for this.

Why most SEO campaigns failed?

1. Wrong priority. SEO is always a supporting role. Business model and customers are always at the highest priority. If by executing your SEO campaign, you need to change your Business model and customers. Something is critically wrong.

2. Content is the real King! In the SEO development process, if you discover that there wasn't any focus on rich, authoritative and compelling content. In my opinion, something is not so right.

3. SEO is not about one time glory. It's a always on-going process and hard work. If you really believe that it's a one time effort, you will painfully discover that you are actually not in the game.

4. A good SEO execution is really about positioning and strategy, less about SEO technical know-how, although technical know-how is a must. Utilmately it's really about creating values and bringing in profits. No point having a number 1 position for keywords that no one will search for it. It's still back to basic - business cashflow.

5. SEO is also about customers (markets). If there is no demand from your target market, it is better to first re-evaluate the business model and marketing strategies before engaging a SEO expert.

SEO Web Hosting is Crucial

Hi again,

Long time no hear from me.

Ok, you might have realised that I am now involved with a Singapore Photo Gallery site. And we managed to get very high hits for the Singapore NDP Photos on the actual Singapore National Day, our organic search hits for the site surpassed 200 (Without the use of Adwords). Check out other interesting Singapore photos: Henderson Waves and Singapore River.

I've also publish some interest NDP preview videos: Red Lions, The NDP FlyPass at Pictures of Singapore Weblogs.

A few days later, a few files at database base level got corrupted and the SingaporeShots site was inactive for about 2 days and this is really expensive. We lost some footings on some keywords. I suspect that search engine spiders came and were not able to crawl our pages and hence affecting the SERPs.

So high availbility web hosting is important for SEO.

BizEngine has advanced a little into ERP and have evaluated some of the best Model View Controller framework: Php Zend; Java Struts; Cakephp and Ofbiz. We will be diving into business intelligence and business processes for a very interesting project. Again I'll be touching on some interesting database technology along the way. Hence, we need to restructure our content at BizEngine's site. So for a while, you will not be able to see the meat.

It's been quite sometime since by last post. As usual I was a little tied down with feasibility studies and preliminary investigations about a project. Also learned more about new technology pertaining to central consolidated database and remote databases synchronisation.

Ok. About the Adsense payout, we should be receiving our second cheque soon (I believe it will be another 30 days at least), just left with only 10 cents to reach $100. And honestly, they are all genuine clicks.

SEO - The longer you wait. The harder it will get.

SEO today is difficult than yesterday. Reason being that more companies will be outsourcing their SEO campaign to professional search marketing companies. And increasingly your competitors will want your most desirable keywords and keyphrases too. It will come a time where it's SEO expert versus SEO expert, trying to position themselve among the first 10th positions for the define keywords.

The only best suggestion in my mind is to do it early. The earlier, the better. Because less competition, a hell lesser risk, cheaper and more manageable.

Remember it's not the technology, but the strategy. The longer you wait, the harder it will get.

BizEngine's Development Updates

Ok. For the past few weeks, examined and studied in greater specifics about Customer Rationship Management (CRM), more about the essential knowledge than about CRM Software. Still, I've made some study about SalesForce and SugarCRM. I've also had some hands on with Apache OFBiz, Zend Php and CakePhp frameworks. Quite a handful load of information to digest! Information overload.

Having done some enterprise solutions in the past and relatively comfortable with Oracle database development. It really helps in understand more about OFBiz, Zend and cakePhp. At BizEngine site, it's a very simple MVC framework done in Php. We should be converting it to Zend framework at a later date.

As I've also mentioned early this year, we will not be actively investing in SEO, but will invest some time and effort on other Web opportunities. So here I am, evalutating and selection a suitable software platform (framework) or Internet adventure.

I've also leveraged on Coppermine Photo software to establish a Singapore Photo Gallery site. Go look, quite some interesting Singapore pictures there. Will publish more when really free.

I will still be relative busy for some time. So it may take some time for me to write my next post.

I too, at times, surf the Web while I was travelling using Pocket PC and a 3.5G mobile phone. I am not sure, but I don't think mine is a HSDPA. Still I face some difficulties, especially flash and javascripted sites.

I was at the 4th SME Credit Bureau Conference on the 28th March 2008. Started at 9am till 5pm.

One of the speakers, Dr Mike Teng, was mentioning about Internet Branding, Internet Marketing, High Page Rank on search engines. So at least, I am more sure now that I am in the right SEO Singapore game.

There are really other fabulous speakers and I learned quite some valuable business advices from the speakers. Very enriching and mind intriguing. At least, I am now asking myself more questions about my business revenue model or charactistic.

Link popularity is one of the more important and favourable strategy that most SEO consultants (or professionals) will adopt to improve your SERPs (Search Engine Resulting Pages).

Some SEO conslutants (including myself), at times we will try to own and manage a few related sites and cross reference links among each other with defined anchor text. In my own opinion, there is no right or wrong about this strategy. But at time, I am pondering whether will the content dilute among the sites and in turn weaken the page SEO (Search Engine Optimization)strength. And yes, it probably could if the sites are talking about the same thing.

Another obvious challenge is about duplicating pages, managing more sites. Unless there are really rich, refreshing and authoritative content that are unique for each site. It is a good idea to keep unique focus content under each site (or each page), and to also establish deep links with highly refreshing content.

Generally there are specific objectives and tasks about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). But a successfully SEO campaign, I believe, should be about establishing a SEO system (or a sub-system) in support of overall business objective. And may not necessarily just about tasks. Although, yes, we still need to perform the specific tasks for the system to work.

For example, a routine blog update every weekday is a task which contribute to the success of your SEO implementation. Updating of blog is not the technical part of an SEO, but the business operating culture which is harder to establish.

Is SEO result Permanent?

At least at this time, based on what I've discovered, it is NOT.

The reasons:
1. More businesses will be engaging SEO (Search Engine Optimization) services, competition will get tougher. Better SEO techniques and strategies will evolve. Search Engine rules about SEO may also changed.
2. I've not seen static SERPs (Search Engine Resulting Pages) YET.
3. There are too many routers on the web and likely that they will take time for them to syncronise themselves. Results will depend on how information is being fetched. If you have a 3G web enabled service phone, try searching anything using Google on your mobile. And do the same with the same keyword using your notebook and home PC. The result may be different.

Will SEO grow in Singapore?

In theory, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one excellent solution for many Singapore companies to reach out to the world without the need to have a physical presence at every corners of the world. SEO should appeal to Singapore companies, because Singapore is only one red-dot on the map. Again this is also a theory.

As Singapore is becoming more globalised, and with the upcoming F1 Singapore Grand Prix (I was told that prints on F1 vehicles are the most expensive ads in the world), Singapore Integrated Resorts and Youth Olympics. There should be a huge SEO opportunity in the area of online advertising and hence should spur SEO growth in Singapore. Related industries like corporate gifts, motoring, sports and hospitality in Singapore should benefit from these major events and they should be investing heavily in expanding their customer based.

In fact, Mocca has already done it, and even our local news welcome the public to submit interesting photos and videos to their news portal. All these are part of effective web marketing.

The question is are we able to capitalise on these great opportunities?

There are SEO services at a rate of just a few hundreds to over 10 of thousands. Whatever the structure of the payment scheme, it is important to note that SEO result must deliver. And what are the scope of your SEO campaign cover?

What is a good web design?

Is having a completely flash animation site consider a good web design? Well it really depends on what view-points you are referring to.

Honestly, I feel that simple (and neat) is beautiful. With good structured navigation links and nice colour tones - that makes it elegant. With a little branding (good sales copy and stunning photos), it becomes classy.

This is the interface part. Whether or not your visitors retent at your site, good web design is key.

SEO: On Page vs Off Page

On page optimization is where a professional SEO company (or consultant) will rewrite your meta-tag values, re-categorise your intellectual property to be published on the web, restructure your site links' navigation, to architect your site to become a customer centered site and all other tasks that help to improve your visibility and retentability at your site.

Off page optimization is about attracting links (quality inbound and relevant links). This usually will include digging your content at DIGG, to produce a viral marketing video, and other marketing strategies to have your targeted audience talked about your business because it is compelling, funny, humourous and maybe sexy.

Between On Page and Off Page, which has got more weight and can we only do the easier one?

This is what I choose to believe:
On Page Optimization is the easier and must do part. Off Page Optimization is more effective at improving your site link popularity. It is best to have both. Off Page is dependent on On Page. They are one.

In my earlier post, I highlighted that content is the essential of any SEO (Search Engine Optimization) campaign. Without good, rich and authoritative content, SEO will have it's limit. So if you already have compelling content for your site SEO campaign, now what's next?

Generally, I will analyise on the keywords and keyphrases frequently use on the search engines pertaining to your industry. There are many good FREE SEO tools to help you in this, I will list only two in this post.

1. Wordtracker keywords suggestion tool (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/)
2. Google Adwords keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal)

There is good value of using these SEO tools, because they can offer you other related search terms pertaining to your business subject or topic which you want to talk about at your site. It is useful to know, first hand, what are the popular and frequent search terms. And then to work toward optimizing your site using these search terms. It really make no sense to optimize a site with rarely used keywords or keyphrases. Remember, SEO is about the strategy, next comes the technology.

Not perfect SEO Case Study.

This is not a perfect SEO case study. But still it brings about the importance of the html title tag and fresh content.

Let's discussed a site about Singapore Photo Gallery at http://www.singaporeshots.com/. This site has really not apply major SEO techniques. All that I did was to set the title tag value to "Singapore Photo Gallary, Images of Singapore". And as today, 09 March 2008, the SERPs (Search Engine Resulting Pages) using the keyword term "Singapore Photo Gallery" at google.com is at the 9th position at the first resulting page.

Just a few days ago, the resulting page for "Singapore Photo Gallery" is at the 5th page using google.com search. Because I've uploaded new photos frequently for the past two weeks and I suspect that fresh content helps to push up the site ranking.

If no SEO campaign, at least write a blog.

If you are not planning to have your site optimized (I meant SEO or Search Engine Optimization). An effective alternative is to establish a blog (or Web log) for yourself or for your company. If you are running a business, in my opinion, writing compelling articles that are authoritative and fresh at your corporate blog is essential.

Establishing a blog is really easy, but to write consistently at your blog is really a challenge for most of us. What if one day you ran out of ideas about what to write? And I discovered that blogging is easier with individuals than most corporate SMEs. As I've mentioned in my earlier post, most SMEs are squeezed for time and resources, and that they are not willing to invest effort in establishing a compelling corporate blog.

Well blogging is an important element of a complete SEO campaign that cannot do without. But you can blog without engaging professional SEO services and draw good traffic. Many have done well just by blogging alone, and more will continue to do so in time to come.

It is still the content of the blog that makes a difference - Content is king!

Drawing Traffic is not Everything about SEO

Basically, I choose to believe that drawing traffic to a site, is the first important objective for any SEO campaign.

The next challenge is how to keep your web visitors' retention rate high and to convert some of these traffic into actual sales. A complete SEO solution should include content architecting and site navigation reengineering so as to facilitate a user (or customer) centered site.

It will be best to first establish a user centered site before engaging SEM (Search Engine Marketing) services. It make no sense to pay (PPC-Pay Per Click) for a visitor's visit and then to see it bounces off.

Is Google PageRank (PR) important?

This is what I believe:

The only thing that drives traffic is content. Not just any content, but RICH, AUTHORITATIVE, RELEVANT and FRESH content. This should be the most important of all.

Google PageRank is a value computed based on who actually link to your site. An inbound link is considered as a vote cast to your site. And this vote has got a weight.

Interestingly, even with a high PR value, it doesn't necessarily converts to high page visibility.

So in any SEO campaign, it is important to first beef up your intellectual property (to be published at your site). Make it a mission that it will be a information driven site. Lay this foundation right from the start and getting HIGH Google PageRank will come naturally and untimately.

An impressive achievement? I don't think so.

Prior to offering Search Engine Optimization (SEO) service, we spent about one year to research and test on SEO.

While talking to others in the Internet industry, especially those who have participated only on ON-PAGE SEO campaign, some claimed that SEO is easy.

I beg to differ.
1. A SEO Campaign is just not only about ON-PAGE OPTIMIZATION. It should also include OFF-PAGE OPTIMIZATION and OFF-LINE Strategies as well.
2. It is not really that easy to be listed on the first page of SERPs (Search Engine Resulting Pages), especially if only focused on ON PAGE OPTIMIZATION.
3. In my opinion, SEO is about positioning and identifying target audience. And this is the ART part and definitely NOT EASY!
